I asked him how he made inside corners on base and shoe. The guy had no idea what a plumb bob or coping saw was. I told him not to even bother measuring the job because he wasn't getting it. The job involved setting several doors and trim work. Just a hammer, tape measure, screwdriver, circular saw and a crowbar. No level, no square, no plumb bob, no chisel, no nail set, no miter saw/miter box, no coping saw, no planes. Nowadays, if a guy has a hammer, tape measure, circular saw and a nail gun he considers himself a master carpenter. It's the cabinetry joints that I have no experience with. I can do the regular carpentry work from framing to trim. I wish I had learned more from him, especially cabinetry work. He was employed by New Orleans Public Service and his job was milling, assembling and finishing the mahogany trim on the street cars. Guys, my grandfather was a cabinet maker and trim carpenter back in the days when things were done right. I will update this thread periodically with additional pictures and commentary. A friend of a friend who knows old tools will be coming to inspect the motor. I may have to remove and disassemble the motor carriage for that, which should be interesting. It needs a lot of additional cleaning and degreasing. I get an hour or two here and there to work on it, which so far have been enjoyable. Raceway and wheels lightly coated with WD-40. It still has a lot of useful life left, and repair parts are still available. While old and a little beat up, all of the adjustment points are solid and precise. My goal is not a 'like new' restoration, but rather fully functional and operational tool. They don't make 'em like this anymore! My uncle and cousin generously moved it to my house with their truck, and now I finally have some time to restore it. Amazingly, when I plugged it in this August and flipped the switch, it fired up like a champ. He wasn't the best about maintaining his tools either, so it was very cruddy. He was sick for several years, and the saw just sat during that time, so it was idle for about ten years. Unfortunately, dad passed away three years ago. :BS:) He taught me the basics of how to use it when I was old enough. (I had to relate this back to guns somehow. It cut down the stock on my first shotgun when I was 12. It helped him to maintain and improve three houses, four boats, and with numerous other projects.
